What image does the word ëGodí conjure up in your mind? Is it an angry school-master type, looking for reasons to punish you and stop you having fun? Is it a semi-senile old man lying on a cloud trying to work out where it all went wrong? Is it an empty space signifying non-existence or non-interest in its existence? Is it a model or figure that depicts some belief systems held by previous generations, but no longer relevant?
Many of us, when pressed, have never thought long enough about whether the mental image we have holds up to any scrutiny, or is just an amalgam of fairy stories and comforting theories. Rather than speculate about what God might be like, it makes more sense to find out what he says he is like. In fact, all the images exampled above are wrong. God describes himself as a loving father who is sitting on his porch, watching the road, waiting for the first sign of his children coming home. He says no matter what weíve done, no matter where weíve been, he is waiting to take us back, to love us, to heal our wounds, to accept us back into the family. God is not, as many assume, an angry dictator, looking for opportunity to vent his fury on us. He longs for relationship with us, to know us, to be known by us, to love us. We are designed to only be truly satisfied in life when we have an intimate relationship with him. In fact, God loves you and I so much that he was willing to do whatever it took to remove the obstacles standing between us and him. At huge personal cost he found a solution so that we could come home. Now he waits to see will we take up the offer.2 - The Coat from LCI on Vimeo.
